Carnival Mix Hollyhock
This heirloom mix is known for it's award winning vibrant dramatic tall spires packed with beautiful flowers. Unlike the classic biennial varieties that take two years to flower the summer carnival hollyhock series is unique because it acts as a hardy annual blooming in it's very first season from seed if started early. It forms as a breathtaking backdrop in cottage gardens and is loved by all pollinators.
Plant Specifics:
Height= 48-72" tall
Full Sun to light dappled afternoon shade
Prefers rich moist well draining soil
Space plants 18-24" apart (air circulation around the plants is crucial for preventing fungal disease like rust on the foliage.
Sow seeds 6-8 weeks before your average last frost dates. For zones 9 and 10 a fall start is preferred.
Plant in biodegradable pots or deep plug trays to minimize transplant shock.
Sow seeds 1/8-1/4" deep and keep moist until germination which can take 10-14 days with soil temps at 70-75 degrees.
Plant care:
Remove spent spires by cutting the stalks back. If you want them to return easily the following year allow flower stalks to fully dry on the plant and drop seed naturally or you can save seed incredibly easy.
